Cellular Art - Spots Before My Eyes!

I remember as a kid how TV shows and news items would censor a face or an exposed body part with a pixilated screen. It was particularly frustrating for a young boy with a keen interest in girls to find the most titillating part of an image censored in this way. Then one day, I made a miraculous discovery. If I squinted my eyes the pixels would merge and reveal the hidden breast or face in reasonable clarity. I remember sharing this discovery with my sister and from that day forward we would be seen squinting aggressively every time someone's privacy was protected on a TV broadcast. Needless to say, now in later life, that we both suffer more than our fair share of wrinkles around our eyes. Our punishment for sticking it to the man!

It was this phenomenon that later instilled my interest in creating art using cells of colour. I have been playing with art throughout my life but could not find a medium that was different to the mainstream. I wanted a style that defined me and my art work. I experimented with pointillism for a while which led me to expand my thoughts and I began to experiment with much larger spots of colour placed more randomly. I became fascinated with the vast diversity of colour that could be applied to depict a subject. Whilst I appreciate Abstract art, I still have this central desire for a painting to be of something recognisable. Cellular art has provided a medium where my paintings work on two levels. Firstly, when viewed closely it is an abstract. A random collection of colours that only hints at the subject it may be. Then as one stands back and views from a distance, the image becomes clear. The cells knit together to unveil the subject with amazing clarity. Alternatively, you could just squint...try it.
